A Year Full Of Activities At Jabatan Psikiatri & Kesihatan Mental, Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah
Amidst the busy routine work of the staff & patients, many exciting activities & programmes are held each year at Jabatan Psikiatri & Kesihatan Mental, Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah. These are the times when the staff learns new experiences and gets the opportunity to bond with our patients & their family members. These are the moments when patients feel a sense of involvement, and a chance to display their hidden talents.
From promoting healthy lifestyle to helping the unfortunate, the activities that are being held never fail to get an astounding response from both the staff and the patients. And that is no different for the year 2010.
Among the activities held in 2010 include the Seminar Gaya Hidup Sihat (Sukan Futsal) Methadone which was held in Taman Tunku Tabor, Alor Star from 28‐ 29 April 2010. During this event, methadone clients of all ages & races came together for a game of futsal, intending to promote healthy living, and at the same time to create a closer bond among the clients.
And then there was the Kursus Pengendalian dan ‘Psychoeducation’ Penyakit Bipolar, held on the 16 June 2010 at the Klinik Psikiatri & Kesihatan Mental, Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah. Staff at the Psychiatric Department here in Alor Star were very fortunate to have Dr. Abdul Kadir Bin Abu Bakar, Pengarah Hospital Permai, Johor Bahru, who enlightened us with the latest information on bipolar mood disorder, with the hope that our patients may benefit from it.
Hari Raya Aidilfitri was a time of celebration & joy. Starting off with Sambutan Ihya’ Ramadhan 1431H/2010M on the 4/8/2010 at our psychiatry clinic, it was a time for both the staff & patients to appreciate the true meaning of the fasting month. Majlis Berbuka Puasa Ramadhan was then held for both the Psychiatry Department and for the methadone clients, on 2 occasions (25 August 2010 & 5 September 2010 respectively). The big celebration, Majlis Sambutan Hari Raya Aidilfitri was held on the 5 October 2010, where everyone left with happy faces & some with prizes after a wonderful meal and an entertaining karaoke competition by the patients themselves.
Another sporting activity, Sukaneka 2010, was organized jointly by the Psychiatry Department & Occupational Therapy Department of Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah & Hospital Sultan Abdul Halim on the 28 October 2010 at the Padang Klinik Kesihatan Kuala Muda. Again, it was an opportunity for the patients to participate & enjoy themselves during such an outing
When the floods came in November 2010, we were there to support & help one another regardless of whether a staff or patient was affected. Both our Male & Female Psychiatric Wards were affected, with waters up to the knee level, but with the quick‐acting & efficiency of all our staff, the inpatients were successfully transferred to Hospital Sultan Abdul Halim, Sungai Petani, while waiting for the floods to subside. Meanwhile, the community team had visited flood relief centers to help those in needs, more so for our patients who were affected. After the floods subsided, the cleaning & replacement of damaged assets had to be done. It was a difficult time, but we managed to pull through.
Besides these events that are held once a year, there are programmes which we carry out on a monthly or even a weekly basis. Among these include the monthly visits to Pendang & other hospitals in Alor Setar (under Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah), as well as outings organized by the Occupational Therapy Department, weekly CME & journal clubs.
It has been a good year, and the Jabatan Psikiatri & Kesihatan Mental of Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah will continue to organize more events & activities for both our staff & patients, and continue to strive for excellence.
